Clemmie Dixon Spangler, Jr.

   Head of the University of North Carolina for 11 years, successful entrepreneur, enviable investor and community leader, C. D. "Dick" Spangler Jr. has built an outstanding record as a businessman and public servant.
    




   
 Junior Achievement
   Spangler graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1954. He then went on to graduate with an M.B.A. from Harvard University School of Business in 1956.
   He served two years in the U.S. Army before returning to Charlotte in 1958 to serve as president of C. D. Spangler Construction Company (1958 - 1986) and president of Golden Eagle Industries (1968 - 1986).
   Dick became involved in education in Charlotte during the 1970s, and served as chair of the North Carolina Board of Education from 1982 to 1986.
   In 1986, he was appointed president of the University of North Carolina System, overseeing 16 campuses around the state. He served until 1997, while the system grew by more than 27,000 students and the near doubling of its overall budget.
   Dick served as chairman of the Bank of North Carolina during the 1980s and was key in its merger with North Carolina National Bank Corporation.
   He currently serves as chairman, National Gypsum Company.
   Spangler is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and president of the Board of Overseers at Harvard University. He has been honored by many groups and educational institutions for his generous support and involvement.
   He is married to Meredith Riggs Spangler and they have two children.
