Biography
Sherwood Haywood (Feb. 17, 1762 - Oct. 5, 1829)
   Born in Edgecombe County in 1762, Sherwood Haywood was the son of William and Charity Hare Haywood. He became a clerk of the state senate in 1786, following the resignation of his brother John Haywood,
    



who became state treasurer.
   Sherwood was appointed the Raleigh agent of the newly chartered Bank of Newbern in 1804, and he served in that post until his death in 1829.
   He was an original trustee of the Raleigh Academy and supported the construction of facilities at the University of North Carolina.
