Insurance NC Mutual (Fire) Insurance Company
Raleigh, NC (1843 - 1865)

The North Carolina Mutual Insurance Company was established by legislative charter in 1843, becoming operational in 1845. The word Fire was added to the company's title in 1859. There is evidence that the firm operated throughout the Civil War, but failed to survive the failure of

antebellum banks and the repudiated Confederate bonds and notes.
The firm provided fire insurance throughout the state, although most business was in the Raleigh area. When the firm opened in 1845, its offices were in B. B. Smith's brick building at Fayetteville & Hargett streets in Raleigh. The building burned in 1851.
During its existence, there were competing mutual fire insurance companies in many North Carolina cities — Fayetteville, Greensborough, Milton, Salem, etc.
Its fire insurance policies were written on all property, except steam mills and turpentine distilleries.
