   He came from a Duke Energy family – his grandfather was the Southern Power Company’s (the original name for the Duke Energy Corporation) first chief engineer, designing and building hydroelectric plants along the Catawba River. Bill Lee trained as an engineer and joined Duke Power in 1955.
   He was active in national energy policy groups. Lee also served as chairman of the state Economic Development Board in 1996, lobbying in the months before his death for a bill providing incentives to attract businesses and jobs. North Carolina enacted the William S. Lee Quality Jobs and Business Expansion Act in late 1996.
