W. Roger Soles (Sept. 16, 1920  - Oct. 20, 2004)

    Born in Columbus County, NC, Roger Soles grew up on the family farm. When World War II broke out, he joined and soon as he was eligible and went on to serve in combat zones.
    




   
 Junior Achievement
   Following his active service, W. Roger Soles graduated from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a bachelor's degree in commerce in 1947. 
   He joined Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Co. in Greensboro as a securities analyst, rapidly advancing. During his early tenure with the company, he provided key financial analyses to President Julian Price and Senior Vice President Joseph M. Bryan that encouraged them to expand Jefferson Standard investments into news media companies, including WBT radio and WBTV in Charlotte. 
   He was named chairman and chief executive in 1967, serving in these positions for 26 years.
